ICA-RUS
This project is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Japan.
Theme 1 - impact assessment
Theme 2 - water, energy, health, food, land use and ecosystem interaction modelling
Theme 3 - effects of global warming - abrupt changes, thresholds and irreversibility in the climate system
Sub-themes focus on:
1. Synthesis
2. Hydrology
3. Health
4. Biogeochemistry of the ocean (Yasu Yamanaka, Hokkaido Uni)
5. Paleoclimate (Ayako Abe-Ouchi, AORI Tokyo Uni)
6. Uncertainty and prediction (Julia Hargreaves. JAMSTEC)
Theme 4 - Mitigation, adaption, geoenginnering - scenarios
Theme 5 - Risk management, science communication, human dimension
JUMP members are involved mostly in Themes 2 and 3.

Sousei
This project is funded by MEXT. The funds were trapped in the Japan government funding crises, but that seems to have been resolved, and the project started in JAMSTEC in October 2012.
Like ICA-RUS, Sousei is also a large project, funding climate-related research in a number of different institutes in Japan. In some ways it is similar to the MEXT Kakushin project which preceded it, but there is one obvious difference, caused by a shift in the focus of the ministry or environment. Whereas ICA-RUS is global scale, its predecessor had a regional focus. The result is inclusion of regional modelling in Sousei.
Sousei "Teams"
A. Prognosis and diagnosis of the global environment.
B. Decadal prediction - towards seamless prediction.
C. Probabilistic assessment and hazards. Focus is regional.
D. Hazards and Risk assessment.
JUMP members are involved motly in Teams A and C.
